Therapy can be for everybody.
The individuals that I work with arrive at therapy is many different states of being. Some feel chronically overwhelmed, stressed and anxious. Many aspects of their lives feel out of control and unmanageable, they describe feeling drained and that they have exhausted their own resources. This is a great time to reach out and get some support... after all, we all need to be supported when life gets challenging.
Others arrive when life is going 'ok', but maybe there is one area which feels out of balance, and is undermining their overall sense of wellbeing. This might be a relationship, an event that has happened or a unexpected change in the persons life. In this case we focus on the area that needs attention. For many, therapy has become a space that can be used preventatively. A tool they use to aid their own personal development, deepen self awareness and ultimately reap the benefits of this practice. All of these are valid reasons to attend therapy, and I'm happy to support you where ever you fit within this spectrum. In short, you don't need to wait until your life falls apart to attend therapy. Everyone deserves some space just for them.
Keep it simple and trust your gut. That instinctive part of you that knows if you feel comfortable with a person when you meet them (or not). While there are many factors to consider when choosing a therapist, choosing someone you feel comfortable with is right at the top of the list for me. Ask yourself 'Do I feel like I could speak freely with this person'. Trust takes time to build, but gut instinct usually points us in the right direction. Additionally, feel free to shop around. Many therapists offer an initial consultation for free or a reduced fee, speak to a few and see what resonates. Ask them to explain the therapeutic model they use in their own words, this will help you understand if what they offer is what your looking for.
The million dollar question!
And one that I don't have a straight forward answer for...
The therapeutic process I offer is tailor made to you as an individual, meaning length of therapy varies greatly. I'm happy to offer sessions on a specific timeline, which would mean agreeing to a set number of sessions and working within that structure. Alternatively, we can work on an open ended agreement, meaning we continue until our therapeutic process is complete.
What I can tell you is that my role as a therapist is to share my skill set with you until you feel self-sufficient and fully resourced within yourself. Throughout our process we will have regular check ins where we discuss our progress, if you are getting what you need from our work together, and ultimately how close to an ending we are. Most of my clients naturally arrive at a place within themselves, where they feel empowered to end our therapeutic relationship on their own terms.
